Salaam Aleikhom AHWA colleagues, Just checking in from BKK,
en route to Phnom Penh later this week for a week, then on to
Colombo for a few weeks more on this TDY.
The whole world awaits the Iraq constitution what a
prize were this to happen even a few days late! I’m
rooting for it.
I’ve drafted three Strategic Objective Initial
Environmental Examinations covering over a dozen activities,
put on a well-attended and participatory 90-minute
environmental compliance workshop, and created a tracking
system for the Regional Development Mission/ Asia environmental
compliance documents, so far. Before I left DC for this 5-week
TDY, I filled out and filed the paperwork that I could to
covert to a Foreign Service Limited appointment from a
contractor.
It’s hot and humid, rainy season here, like in DC but
more so. My hotel, the Conrad with its teak furniture, is two
blocks from my office with its lovely mahogany desks and
cabinets and leather chair you can hold your breath to
walk here (and likely should), narrow and wavy sidewalks, smell
of raw sewage and cooking fish, and under 25-cent hot meals on
the street… Girls still throw water on boys they want to
marry, during the beginning of the annual rainy season as
I’ve seen in years past. I had my teeth cleaned at the
mall next to my hotel on Monday for under $20… And a
relaxing massage for under $10 on Saturday. There was an isle
that everyone local passed through easily at the mall
about 8 inches wide (from my wrist to elbow). I always feel
like a giant in SE Asia, banging my head above or getting
nearly stuck in aisle. Don’t see many people with gray
hair I think more than 50 percent of the population is
under 25 years old. Still, respect is still given to age. The
hotel elevators accommodate 24 people each per the signs
but likely only 16 American-sized people as I did a
measurement. Of course, most places don’t have a 4th
floor as the symbol for “four” in Chinese is the
same as the symbol for “death.” Ah, travel, sweet
travel…
I took a wrong turn from my Conrad Hotel this a.m. en route
to my office and walked an extra 1/4 mile in 8 inches of
humidity. Someone needs to invent a humidity-repellant.
Best wishes and be joyful, a merry heart doeth good like
medicine.
